Communication and self-awareness

Self-awareness and positive communication

Understand why you communicate the way you do before trying to change anything. Two days with DISC and the Enneagram to spot your reflexes, see the situations where they cost you, and gain the flexibility to reach people who do not work like you.

Four colleagues talk and smile around a wooden table, notebooks and cups in front of them, in a bright room full of plants

What you will be able to do

  • Know the 9 base types of the Enneagram
  • Know the notions of integration and disintegration
  • Know your own personality base type in the Enneagram
  • Use your "wings" to improve your communication and move your projects forward
  • Give constructive corrective feedback using the "sandwich" technique
  • Give constructive positive feedback using non-violent communication
  • Answer aggression or manipulation (judgements, generalisations, distortions) accurately with a proven technique

Programme

  1. Knowing yourself better

    • What there is to gain from working on how you yourself operate
    • A 140-question Enneagram questionnaire on communication and behaviour
    • Your profile's strengths, talents and watch-points
    • Understanding your motives and where your way of communicating comes from
    • Setting a precise objective rather than a good resolution
  2. Filters and traps

    • The iceberg: what you say, what you think, what the other person hears
    • Beliefs, interpretations, and everyone's private frame of reference
    • The drama triangle and the games of manipulation
  3. The keys to positive communication

    • Assertiveness: accurate, honest and specific
    • Adjusting your communication to the personality in front of you
    • Making a request without aggression, using non-violent communication
  4. Techniques for the hard moments

    • Refusing: saying no calmly, without guilt and without over-justifying
    • Criticising a fact rather than a person
    • Answering bad faith and objections
    • Answering attacks: generalisations, judgements, distortions

What this training gives you

Understanding your personality and the way you communicate is the basis of personal development and of good working relationships.

Two days on what you do by default, on what it costs you in situations where it does not fit, and on how to widen your range without becoming someone else.

Communicating in three languages

One Mauritian feature comes up in almost every group: a work conversation moves between Creole, French and English depending on the person, the topic and the level of formality, often within the same sentence.

The register changes with the language, and a message received as friendly in one can come across as curt in another. The role plays take this into account explicitly, because participants raise it spontaneously as a source of misunderstanding.

Questions about this training

Is this the starting point for the other trainings?

For most participants, yes. The management, Enneagram and assertiveness programmes assume you already see your own reflexes. This is where that is built.

What do DISC and the Enneagram each bring?

DISC works on observable behaviour and quickly gives a team a shared vocabulary. The Enneagram works on motivation and on what happens under pressure. Two days are enough to be useful with both, not to become an expert in either, and that is said from the start.

What is positive communication, in practice?

Saying what needs to be said in a form the other person can act on, rather than in the form that comes naturally. Most of the two days are spent practising this on situations brought by participants.

In which language is the training run?

In French, English or Spanish, depending on the group. Mauritian Creole is not a delivery language, and groups most often agree on French.

DISC and Driving Forces

Two instruments that answer different questions: DISC describes how a person behaves, Driving Forces describe why. Two days, an individual report for each participant, and a relationship strategy worked out on the colleagues who are hardest to reach.
